Construction & DIY Calculators

Estimate materials before you buy โ€” concrete, tiles, roofing and Indian land units.

Updated June 2026 ยท Free ยท No sign-up

Whether you are getting a house built, retiling a bathroom or landscaping a garden, the hardest part is often estimating how much material to order so you are not left short or paying for a surplus. This cluster covers the everyday building maths, from the Concrete and Tile calculators that size up exactly what a job needs (with a waste allowance) to the Square Footage and Roofing calculators that handle areas and pitched roofs. The Gravel, Mulch and Stair calculators take care of the rest of a typical project.

For Indian buyers and builders, land and plot sizes bring their own headache because traditional units differ from one state to the next. The Area Converter handles this directly, converting between local units like bigha, biswa, katha, gaj, guntha, ground, cent and chatak and standard units such as square feet, square metres and acres. Since a bigha is not the same size everywhere, it supports the common state variants for UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, Punjab and more so your conversions match local usage.

Frequently asked questions

How much concrete do I need for a slab?

Concrete volume is simply length times width times thickness, kept in consistent units and then converted to cubic metres or cubic feet. It is wise to order a little extra to account for spillage, uneven sub-grade and waste. The Concrete calculator works out the volume and the number of bags for your dimensions so you can place an accurate order.

Why does a bigha have different sizes in different states?

Bigha is a traditional land unit that was never standardised nationally, so its size evolved differently across regions. As a result, a bigha in Uttar Pradesh covers a different area than one in Bihar, Rajasthan or Punjab. The Area Converter lets you pick the relevant state variant so the conversion to square feet or square metres reflects local usage accurately.

How do I calculate the number of tiles needed for a room?

Divide the total floor or wall area by the area of a single tile to get the base count, then add a waste factor for cuts, breakages and future repairs. A waste allowance of around 10% is common, and more for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners. The Tile calculator does this for you, including the waste factor, so you know how many boxes to buy.

What is 1 gaj in square feet?

One gaj is the same as one square yard, which equals 9 square feet (a square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet). Gaj is widely used for plot sizes in North India, so a 100 gaj plot is 900 square feet. The Area Converter handles gaj alongside other Indian and standard units for quick, accurate conversions.
