Method matters
Same semester data, two different aggregation methods. When every semester carries identical credits the two numbers match exactly โ but as soon as credit loads vary, the credit-weighted aggregate (the one on your transcript) drifts from the simple average.
Credit-weighted
8.71
VTU / Anna / JNTU / most engineering
Simple average
8.71
Informal / equal-credit programs
Both methods match because every semester carries the same credits. Vary the credits to see the difference.
Per-semester SGPA
Per-semester contribution to CGPA
| Sem | SGPA | Credits | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | 8.50 | 24 | 1.0625 |
| S2 | 8.70 | 24 | 1.0875 |
| S3 | 8.20 | 24 | 1.0250 |
| S4 | 8.90 | 24 | 1.1125 |
| S5 | 9.00 | 24 | 1.1250 |
| S6 | 8.50 | 24 | 1.0625 |
| S7 | 9.10 | 24 | 1.1375 |
| S8 | 8.80 | 24 | 1.1000 |
| CGPA | 8.71 | ||
Contributions sum to the CGPA. Higher-credit semesters contribute more under the credit-weighted method.
Next step
Convert this CGPA to percentage
Different boards use different formulas โ CBSE ร 9.5, VTU (CGPA โ 0.75) ร 10, Anna, JNTU. The CGPA-to-Percentage calculator picks the right one for your board.
How It Works
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the aggregate of every SGPA you have earned across every semester completed so far. Every engineering programme โ B.Tech / B.E. / M.Tech โ reports CGPA on the 10-point scale, updated after each semester result. This calculator takes one row per semester and combines them into a single CGPA using either equal weighting or credit-weighted aggregation.
The two formulas
Simple average โ every semester counts equally:
CGPA = (SGPA1 + SGPA2 + โฆ + SGPAn) / n
Credit-weighted โ each semester contributes in proportion to its credit load:
CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPAi ร Creditsi) / ฮฃ Creditsi
When every semester carries identical credits, the two formulas yield identical results. As soon as the credit loads vary โ a project-heavy final semester, elective overload in the middle of the degree, summer modules โ the credit-weighted aggregate is the one that appears on the official transcript.
Which method does my university use?
VTU, Anna University, JNTU Hyderabad/Kakinada, AKTU, SPPU, and Mumbai University all use the credit-weighted method. So do almost every other engineering university on the 10-point scale. The simple-average method is sometimes used informally, or by arts / science programmes where every semester carries an equal credit load. When in doubt, use credit-weighted โ it matches what is printed on your transcript.
Frequently Asked Questions
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the GPA for one semester only โ calculated from the grades you earned in that semester's courses, weighted by each course's credits. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the aggregate across every semester you have completed so far, weighted by the credits in each semester. Your transcript usually shows one SGPA per semester plus a running CGPA that updates after every semester.
