Anna University percentage formula
Anna's Office of the Controller of Examinations officially notifies the conversion formula as below. Substituting your current CGPA:
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
= (8.20 − 0.75) × 10
= 77.03%
Algebraically identical to (CGPA × 10) − 5, but Anna's regulations write it in the (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 form.
Per-semester contribution
Heavier-credit semesters contribute more to the final CGPA. Contributions sum to the CGPA itself.

How It Works
Anna University, Chennai is the largest engineering university in Tamil Nadu with over 650 affiliated colleges. Every B.E. / B.Tech (8 semesters / 4 years) and M.E. / M.Tech (4 semesters / 2 years) programme reports results on a 10-point scale. This calculator takes one row per completed semester and combines the SGPAs into a single CGPA using the credit-weighted formula that appears on the official Anna University consolidated grade card.
The Anna University CGPA formula
CGPA = Σ (SGPAi × Creditsi) / Σ Creditsi
Each semester contributes in proportion to its credit load — typically 22–25 credits for B.E. / B.Tech, lighter for M.E. / M.Tech. A heavier semester pulls the CGPA more strongly toward its SGPA.
Anna University percentage conversion
Anna's examination cell publishes the officially notified conversion formula:
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
For example, a CGPA of 8.0 converts to (8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75%. This expression is mathematically identical to (CGPA × 10) − 5 (the form VTU / AKTU print on their transcripts), but Anna's regulations explicitly write the (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 form.
Class designation
Anna University classifies successful candidates into four bands on the consolidated grade card:
- First Class with Distinction — CGPA ≥ 8.25 (≥ 77.5%). Additionally requires passing all subjects in first attempt, no break in study, and completing the degree in the minimum prescribed time. Meeting only the CGPA threshold is not enough — Anna's examination cell enforces all four conditions.
- First Class — CGPA 6.75 – 8.25 (62.5 – 77.5%).
- Second Class — CGPA 5.75 – 6.75 (50 – 60%).
- Pass — below the Second Class threshold but with no failed subjects.
Letter grades on the Anna scale
O (10) for 90+%, A+ (9) for 80–89%, A (8) for 70–79%, B+ (7) for 60–69%, B (6) for 50–59%, C (5) for 40–49%, and RA (re-appear) below the pass threshold. Note that on the consolidated grade card the letter grade is determined per subject, not per CGPA — the page-level letter grade here is a decade-band on the final CGPA for at-a-glance reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Anna University, Chennai uses the officially notified conversion formula: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. For example, a CGPA of 8.0 converts to (8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75%. This formula is written this way in Anna's regulations — it is mathematically equivalent to (CGPA × 10) − 5 (the form VTU and AKTU print), but Anna's examination cell uses the (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 expression on its official notices.
