How It Works

VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka) is the largest engineering university by enrolment with 200+ affiliated colleges. SGPA and CGPA both sit on a 10-point scale under VTU's Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), and the percentage equivalent printed on the consolidated marks card is derived using a formula specific to VTU.

The VTU percentage formula

Percentage = (CGPA ร— 10) โˆ’ 7.5

This is the formula officially notified by VTU and used on every CBCS transcript. A CGPA of 8.0 maps to 72.5%, a CGPA of 9.0 maps to 82.5%, and a CGPA of 10.0 maps to 92.5%. It differs from the CBSE ร— 9.5 multiplier used at the school-leaving stage and from formulas used by Anna University, JNTU, and other engineering universities.

How CGPA is aggregated across semesters

VTU uses credit-weighted aggregation:

CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPAi ร— Creditsi) / ฮฃ Creditsi

The sum runs across every semester completed so far. A B.E./B.Tech programme has 8 semesters spread over 4 years; M.Tech has 4 semesters over 2 years. Each semester typically carries 24-26 credits โ€” heavier semesters (more theory + lab + project credits) contribute more strongly to the running CGPA, lighter semesters contribute less.

Class designations

VTU prints a class designation on the final marks card based on the overall percentage:

  • First Class with Distinction โ€” 75% and above (CGPA โ‰ฅ 8.25)
  • First Class โ€” 60% to under 75% (CGPA 6.75 to 8.24)
  • Second Class โ€” 50% to under 60% (CGPA 5.75 to 6.74)
  • Pass โ€” 40% to under 50% (CGPA 4.75 to 5.74)
  • Fail โ€” below 40% (CGPA < 4.75)

Frequently Asked Questions

VTU uses Percentage = (CGPA ร— 10) โˆ’ 7.5. The formula is officially notified by VTU and printed on transcripts since the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) was rolled out. Worked example: a CGPA of 8.0 maps to (8.0 ร— 10) โˆ’ 7.5 = 72.5%. A CGPA of 9.0 maps to 82.5%. The formula differs from the CBSE ร— 9.5 multiplier used at the school-leaving (Class X / XII) stage.
