How It Works
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka) is the largest engineering university by enrolment with 200+ affiliated colleges. SGPA and CGPA both sit on a 10-point scale under VTU's Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The percentage equivalent printed on the consolidated marks card is derived using a VTU formula that changed between scheme generations, so the right formula depends on your batch's scheme.
The VTU percentage formula (by scheme)
2021 / 2022 scheme (current students): Percentage = CGPA ร 10. This is the formula in clause 22OB 6.7 of VTU's 2022 B.E./B.Tech regulations โ a CGPA of 8.20 maps to 82.0%, and a CGPA of 9.0 maps to 90.0%.
2015 / 2017 / 2018 scheme (older batches): Percentage = (CGPA โ 0.75) ร 10, equivalently (CGPA ร 10) โ 7.5. On this scheme a CGPA of 8.0 maps to 72.5% and a CGPA of 9.0 maps to 82.5%. Both VTU formulas differ from the CBSE ร 9.5 multiplier used at the school-leaving stage and from the rules used by Anna University, JNTU, and other engineering universities. Use the scheme switch above to match your transcript.
How CGPA is aggregated across semesters
VTU uses credit-weighted aggregation:
CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPAi ร Creditsi) / ฮฃ Creditsi
The sum runs across every semester completed so far. A B.E./B.Tech programme has 8 semesters spread over 4 years; M.Tech has 4 semesters over 2 years. Each semester typically carries 24-26 credits โ heavier semesters (more theory + lab + project credits) contribute more strongly to the running CGPA, lighter semesters contribute less.
Class designations
VTU prints a class designation on the final marks card based on the overall percentage. Because the percentage formula differs by scheme, the CGPA cut-offs differ too:
2021 / 2022 scheme (percentage = CGPA ร 10, clause 22OB 6.8):
- First Class with Distinction โ 70% and above (CGPA โฅ 7.0)
- First Class โ 60% to under 70% (CGPA 6.0 to 6.99)
- Second Class โ 50% to under 60% (CGPA 5.0 to 5.99)
- Pass โ 40% to 50% (CGPA 4.0 to 5.0)
2015 / 2017 / 2018 scheme (percentage = CGPA ร 10 โ 7.5):
- First Class with Distinction โ 75% and above (CGPA โฅ 8.25)
- First Class โ 60% to under 75% (CGPA 6.75 to 8.24)
- Second Class โ 50% to under 60% (CGPA 5.75 to 6.74)
- Pass โ 40% to under 50% (CGPA 4.75 to 5.74)

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your scheme. For the current 2021 / 2022 scheme, VTU's regulation (clause 22OB 6.7) uses Percentage = CGPA ร 10 โ a CGPA of 8.2 maps to 82.0%. For the older 2015 / 2017 / 2018 scheme, VTU notified Percentage = (CGPA โ 0.75) ร 10, i.e. (CGPA ร 10) โ 7.5 โ so a CGPA of 8.0 maps to 72.5%. Pick the scheme that matches your batch above; this calculator defaults to the current 2022 scheme. Both differ from the CBSE ร 9.5 multiplier used at the school-leaving (Class X / XII) stage.
