How does AKTU calculate CGPA across semesters?

AKTU uses the credit-weighted aggregation formula: CGPA = Σ(SGPA_i × Credits_i) / Σ Credits_i, summed across every semester completed. Each semester contributes in proportion to its credit load — a heavy 28-credit semester pulls the CGPA more than a light 20-credit project semester. The result is then printed on the transcript rounded to two decimal places.

What CGPA is required for Honours in AKTU?

AKTU awards Honours (Distinction) to students with at least 75% — which corresponds to a CGPA of 8.25 or higher. First Class is awarded at 60-75% (CGPA 6.75-8.25), Second Class at 50-60% (CGPA 5.75-6.75), Pass at 40-50% (CGPA 4.75-5.75), and below 40% is Fail. These class designations are published in the AKTU examination regulations and apply uniformly across all affiliated colleges.

Is AKTU same as UPTU?

Yes — AKTU (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University) is the renamed UPTU (Uttar Pradesh Technical University). The university was renamed in 2015 to honour the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, but the institution, its 200+ affiliated colleges, and its academic regulations remained the same. Degrees issued under UPTU pre-2015 and AKTU post-2015 are equivalent. The CGPA-to-percentage formula has not changed with the renaming.

Does AKTU use SGPA or CGPA for placements?

How It Works

AKTU (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow) was renamed from UPTU in 2015 in honour of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It is the umbrella technical university for over 200 engineering, pharmacy and management colleges across Uttar Pradesh. Every B.Tech and M.Tech programme reports SGPA per semester and CGPA cumulatively on the 10-point scale defined by AKTU's Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS).

The two formulas

Aggregation — credit-weighted across all completed semesters:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA_i × Credits_i) / Σ Credits_i

Percentage conversion — the AKTU CBCS rule:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

The two notations (CGPA × 10) − 7.5 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 produce the same number — both appear in different AKTU notifications. Older pre-CBCS schemes sometimes used CGPA × 9.5, so if you joined under a legacy syllabus, check the conversion formula printed on your transcript.

Class designations under AKTU

AKTU classifies the final degree on the basis of the aggregated percentage at the end of the programme:

Honours / Distinction — 75% and above (CGPA ≥ 8.25)
First Class — 60% to below 75% (CGPA 6.75 to 8.25)
Second Class — 50% to below 60% (CGPA 5.75 to 6.75)
Pass — 40% to below 50% (CGPA 4.75 to 5.75)
Fail — below 40% (CGPA < 4.75)

A typical AKTU B.Tech semester carries 24-28 credits depending on theory, lab and project mix. The final-year project-heavy semester is usually lighter on credits, and that uneven distribution is exactly why AKTU uses the credit-weighted formula rather than a simple average.
