The old "multiply by 7" rule for cat years is a myth. A cat does not age at one steady rate across its whole life. Kittens grow up astonishingly fast — a one-year-old cat is already roughly a teenager in human terms — and the pace then slows to a gentle, near-linear crawl. Multiplying by seven would tell you a one-year-old cat is only seven in human years, which badly understates how mature it already is, and it would also overstate the ageing of a very old cat. The AAFP/AAHA Life-Stage Formula

The American Association of Feline Practitioners and the American Animal Hospital Association use a piecewise mapping that this calculator follows:

• Year 1: about 15 human years
• Year 2: +9 more (so 2 cat years ≈ 24 human years)
• Each year after the second: +4 human years

So the first two years of a cat's life are equivalent to roughly 24 human years combined, and from then on every additional cat year adds about four human years. The rule of thumb "first two years ≈ 24 human years, then +4 per year" is the easy way to remember it.

Adjusting for Lifestyle

Where a cat lives changes how hard those years are on its body. Outdoor cats face traffic, predators, fights, parasites, and infectious disease, so this tool adds roughly 10% to their human-age equivalent to reflect the extra wear; a cat that goes both indoors and out gets about a 5% addition. A purely indoor cat uses the base figure with no adjustment. This is a lifestyle weighting on the human-age equivalent, not a separate biological clock — it is a sensible nudge, not an exact law.

Worked Example

Take an indoor cat that is 5 years old. The first year contributes 15 human years. The second year adds 9, bringing the running total to 24. The three years beyond that (years 3, 4 and 5) each add 4, which is 3 × 4 = 12 more. Adding 24 + 12 gives a base human age of 36 years. Because this cat is indoor, there is no lifestyle adjustment, so the final answer is about 36 human years. Life Stages

Vets group cats into stages rather than single ages. Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is still using the "times seven" shortcut, which is wrong at every age.
