Reminder: registering a car outside the state where you actually reside is a violation of §47 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 if the vehicle remains in the higher-tax state > 12 months. Approximations assume road tax bands typical for ₹10-20 L cars — check the destination RTO Parivahan portal before deciding.

How It Works
The on-road price is what you actually pay the dealer — not the advertised ex-showroom number. Between the ex-showroom and the car keys sit a stack of mandatory charges: RTO road tax, registration fee, motor insurance, handling charges, optional accessories, and 1% TCS if the ex-showroom is above ₹10 L. Add it all up and the on-road price typically lands 18-30% higher than the ex-showroom, depending mostly on which state you register the car in.
Why State Matters Most
Road tax is by far the largest variable component — and every state sets its own schedule. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh sit at the high end (13-18% of ex-showroom for new petrol/diesel cars in the mid-segment), while Chhattisgarh, Assam, Haryana and Gujarat sit at the low end (5-9%). On a ₹15 L car, that differential alone is ₹1-₹1.5 L. Diesel cars typically attract a slightly higher slab than petrol in most states. EVs get the biggest break: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and several others have waived road tax entirely on electric vehicles to push EV adoption.
The TCS Surprise
For cars with an ex-showroom above ₹10 L, the dealer collects an extra 1% Tax Collected at Source under §206C(1F) of the Income Tax Act. It is technically a prepaid credit — you claim it back as a refund or set it off against your tax liability when you file your ITR — but you do have to pay it up-front at the time of purchase. The ₹10 L threshold is on ex-showroom, not on-road.
Why the Number Is Just a Starting Point
Road tax bands within each state are progressive — typically 4-15% across ₹10 L, ₹20 L and ₹30 L+ break points. The single percentage shown here is the mid-band rate for ₹10-20 L cars (the most common passenger-car segment); luxury / premium cars will see higher slabs. Insurance is approximated at 3% of ex-showroom for a 1-year comprehensive policy — actual quotes will vary ±20-30% by IDV, engine size, zone and add-ons.
