To claim HRA (House Rent Allowance) tax exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, salaried employees must submit rent receipts to their employer's payroll team — typically 12 monthly receipts or one consolidated annual statement. The receipt is the document the employer uses to verify the rental amount being claimed against the HRA component of your salary.
Receipt content (the essentials)
Each receipt must contain: tenant name & address (the rented property), landlord name & address, monthly rent amount (in figures and words), the period covered (e.g. "April 2026"), the receipt issue date, the receipt number, and a signature space for the landlord. If the rent exceeds ₹5,000 per month, a ₹1 revenue stamp must be affixed with the landlord signing across it. If the annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, the landlord's PAN must be printed on every receipt.
Why these thresholds matter
The ₹1 lakh annual threshold for landlord PAN is enforced by CBDT Circular No. 8/2013 — without it, the employer's payroll system will not approve the HRA exemption in Form 12BB and the full HRA will be added to your taxable salary. The ₹5,000 monthly revenue-stamp rule comes from the Indian Stamp Act 1899 (Schedule I Article 53). Both are legal requirements — the calculator surfaces a warning so you don't lose your exemption to a missing document.

Rent receipts are mandatory documentation for claiming HRA tax exemption under Section 10(13A) + Rule 2A of the Income Tax Act when the HRA component you are claiming exceeds ₹3,000 per month. Most salaried employees submit either 12 monthly receipts or a single 12-month annual statement to their employer's payroll team before the financial year closes, so the exemption reflects on Form 16.
If you miss the payroll deadline, the same exemption can still be claimed when filing your ITR — but you must retain the receipts for at least 7 years in case of scrutiny.

Technically yes for very small claims (HRA below ₹3,000 per month), but no employer will process an HRA exemption without supporting receipts — Form 12BB submission requires it. If the employer rejects the claim due to missing receipts, you can still claim the HRA exemption directly while filing your ITR.
The Income Tax Department accepts the claim if you can produce receipts plus bank-transfer proof during scrutiny. The safest path is to always collect monthly receipts, even when paying parents or relatives — the documentation chain is what survives a notice 3-5 years later.
If your landlord does not have a PAN, they can sign a self-declaration in Form 60 stating they do not hold one — this is legally acceptable per the same CBDT Circular. However, in practice most employers' payroll systems reject Form 60 declarations and insist on a real PAN because the rental amount is large enough that the landlord ought to be filing tax returns anyway.
If your landlord refuses to share PAN despite having one, you have three options: (1) negotiate with the landlord, (2) claim the exemption directly in your ITR and defend it during scrutiny with bank-transfer proof + the rental agreement, or (3) switch landlords. Option 3 sounds harsh but is sometimes the only practical path for high-rent situations.
