How It Works
The day counter answers three closely related questions: how many days are left until a future date, how many days have passed since a past date, and how many days fall between any two dates you choose. It counts real calendar days, so leap years and uneven month lengths are handled automatically, and it can optionally narrow the count to business days by excluding weekends, plus any custom holidays you add. Alongside the headline number it shows handy extras โ the weekday the target date falls on, its day-of-year position, and rough week and month equivalents.
It suits a wide range of everyday and professional needs in India: counting down to an exam, wedding, festival or trip; tracking how long since a relationship, a project kickoff or a device purchase; and โ most usefully for work โ measuring deadlines in working days. A chartered accountant counting days to a filing due date, an HR team computing notice-period or leave durations, a project manager sizing a sprint, or a freelancer billing by working day can all switch on "exclude weekends" and drop in the relevant public holidays to get a realistic figure rather than a raw calendar count.
Countdown vs count-up vs between
Days Until: counts forward from today to a future date โ your countdown.
Days Since: counts backward from a past date to today โ your count-up.
Between: counts from one date to another regardless of where today sits, and it does not matter which date you put first โ the tool orders them for you.
How the count is made
The counter steps day by day from the earlier date to the later date and tallies each one. The count is inclusive of both endpoints in the business-day and holiday logic, while the plain calendar figure for "Days Until" is the straightforward difference between the two dates. When "exclude weekends" is on, every Saturday and Sunday in the span is skipped; when you add custom holidays, those specific dates are skipped too โ but only if they fall on a day that would otherwise have counted. Holiday matching compares against your local calendar date, so a date you add is treated as that exact day in Indian time, with no off-by-one surprises near midnight.
Business days and Indian holidays
"Business days" (or working days) means Monday to Friday. India also observes many public holidays โ some fixed on the Gregorian calendar, such as Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) and Christmas (25 December), and many that move every year because they follow lunar calendars, such as Diwali, Holi and Eid. The built-in upcoming-event list covers the fixed-date national holidays; for festivals whose date shifts annually, add them yourself in the custom-holidays box so the working-day count matches your actual calendar.
Worked example (India context)
Suppose an employee resigns and must serve a notice period running from Monday 1 June 2026 to 30 June 2026. Using Between Dates with both dates entered, the plain calendar count is 30 days (inclusive). Now switch on "exclude weekends": June 2026 has weekends that get removed, leaving the Monday-to-Friday total โ the actual working days served. If a public holiday such as a festival also falls inside that window, add it as a custom holiday and the count drops by one more. This is exactly how notice periods, project estimates and SLA deadlines are usually measured in working days rather than raw calendar days.
Tips
For deadlines, decide upfront whether the rule means calendar days or working days โ many legal and tax deadlines in India are calendar days, but internal project and HR timelines often mean working days. When you need working days, remember to add the festivals that land in your range, since only the fixed national holidays are pre-loaded. To plan ahead, tap any upcoming event to jump straight into a countdown for it.
Common mistakes
A classic error is the "off-by-one" deadline โ being unsure whether both the start and end date count. Here the day span is inclusive, so "within 30 days from today" lands on the 30th day. Another is forgetting that excluding weekends alone is not enough for an Indian working calendar; lunar-festival holidays must be added manually because their dates change each year. And when using Days Since, make sure the date you pick is actually in the past โ a future date belongs in Days Until.
