Age Calculator

The age calculator tells you exactly how old you are — not just in years, but in years, months and days, with the totals also expressed in days, weeks and hours. Enter your date of birth, and by default it measures your age as of today; change the second date to any past or future day to find out how old you were, or will be, on that date. It is precise to a single day because it counts real calendar time rather than approximating a year as 365 days, so it correctly handles leap years and the fact that months range from 28 to 31 days.

This is the tool you reach for whenever an exact age matters. In India that comes up constantly: confirming eligibility for school admission cut-off dates, checking the minimum age for a driving licence, voting, or opening certain bank and investment accounts, completing job-application and competitive-exam forms that ask for age "as on" a specific date, working out retirement timelines, or simply counting down to a birthday or anniversary. Parents use it to track an infant's age in weeks and days; HR teams use it to verify a candidate's age on a reference date; students use it to fill exam forms where the age is calculated as on the 1st of a particular month.

How it works

The calculation walks from the birth date to the target date one unit at a time. First it counts the number of full years that have elapsed — a year only counts once you have actually passed that birthday. Then, from the most recent birthday, it counts the number of full months, and finally the leftover days. Because it borrows the correct number of days from the actual preceding month (28, 29, 30 or 31), the day count is always right, and 29 February birthdays are handled honestly rather than being silently shifted. The total-days, total-weeks and total-hours figures are derived from the genuine number of calendar days between the two dates, so they already account for every leap day in between.

Leap years, explained

A leap year adds 29 February, which is why a fixed "365 days = 1 year" shortcut drifts over time. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, and 2024 and 2028 are. This calculator uses real dates, so these rules are applied automatically; you never need to adjust anything.

Worked example (India context)

Imagine a candidate born on 15 August 1998 filling a government exam form that asks for age "as on 1 January 2026". Counting full years from 15 August 1998 gives 27 years (up to 15 August 2025). From 15 August 2025 to 1 January 2026 is 4 full months (to 15 December 2025) plus the remaining days to 1 January — 17 days. So the exact age on that date is 27 years, 4 months and 17 days. If the form instead simply needed the age today, you would change the second field to today's date and read the result straight off.

Tips

For forms that specify a cut-off such as "age as on 01-01-2026", set the second date field to that exact date rather than leaving it on today — examiners calculate to that fixed day, and even a few days can decide eligibility. Use the total-days figure for milestone celebrations (a 10,000-day birthday is a fun one), and the days-until-birthday number to plan ahead. Common mistakes

The most frequent error is treating a year as exactly 365 days and multiplying — over a few decades this can be off by more than a week because of leap days. Another is mixing up the date order; the date of birth must come before the "age at" date, or the result will not be valid. People also assume a birthday "counts" the moment the date arrives anywhere in the world, but age increments on your local calendar date.
