How It Works

This unit converter changes a measurement from one unit into another across nine everyday categories: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, pressure, energy, and digital storage. You pick a category, choose the unit you are starting from and the unit you want, type a value, and the converted figure appears instantly along with a full table of that value in every other unit in the category. There is nothing to install and nothing to remember — the maths is handled for you.

It is built for anyone who runs into mixed units in daily Indian life: a parent converting a child's weight from kilograms to pounds for a foreign form, a homebuyer translating a flat's carpet area from square feet to square metres, a cook scaling a recipe from cups to millilitres, a student checking a physics answer, or a developer converting file sizes from megabytes to gigabytes. Because India uses the metric system day to day but constantly meets imperial units in imported products, manuals, and the internet, a quick, reliable converter saves real time.

What it does and who it is for

The tool covers the conversions people actually need rather than every obscure unit. Length handles millimetres through kilometres plus inches, feet, yards, and miles. Weight spans grams and kilograms alongside pounds, ounces, and stone. Volume includes litres and millilitres with US and Imperial gallons. Temperature, area, speed, pressure, energy, and digital storage round out the set. It suits students, parents, shoppers, cooks, tradespeople, and anyone comparing specifications written in unfamiliar units.

How it works

Most conversions use a simple base-unit method. Every unit in a category has a fixed factor that expresses it in one common base unit (for example, the base for length is the metre). To convert, the tool first multiplies your value by the starting unit's factor to reach the base, then divides by the target unit's factor:

Result = Value × (from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor)

For instance, 1 foot has a factor of 0.3048 metres and 1 metre has a factor of 1, so 1 ft × (0.3048 ÷ 1) = 0.3048 m. Temperature is the exception because its scales do not share a zero point, so it uses direct formulas instead of factors — for example °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.

A worked example

Say you are buying a flat and the builder quotes the carpet area as 1,200 square feet, but the registration paperwork wants square metres. One square foot equals about 0.092903 square metres, so 1,200 × 0.092903 = 111.48 m² (rounded). Enter 1200 in the area category with "square feet" selected as the from-unit and "square metres" as the to-unit, and the converter shows this immediately, plus the same area in square yards, acres, and hectares in the table below — useful when a plot is described in different units across documents.

Here are a few conversions Indian users reach for often:

Handy tips

  • Use the swap button (⇄) to flip the from and to units instantly when you realise you need the reverse conversion.
  • The full conversion table below the result lets you read your value in every unit at once — handy when one document uses feet and another uses metres.
  • For land, remember that 1 acre ≈ 4,047 m² and 1 hectare = 10,000 m²; switch to the area category to convert between bigha-style measurements via square metres.
  • For everyday rules of thumb: 1 inch ≈ 2.54 cm, 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb, and 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing US and Imperial gallons: a US gallon is 3.78541 L but an Imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 L — always check which one a manual means.
  • Treating fuel economy as a simple conversion: miles per gallon and litres per 100 km are inversely related, so you cannot just multiply by a single factor.
  • Confusing weight and mass casually: in everyday use kilograms and pounds are treated as weight, which is fine here, but they are technically units of mass.
  • Forgetting that temperature is not proportional: 20°C is not "twice as warm" as 10°C, because the Celsius scale does not start at absolute zero.
