Costs Not Modelled

Pre-departure costs (GRE/GMAT prep ₹50K-1L, application fees ₹50-150 each × 8-10 universities, English test ₹15K, transcript courier ₹10-20K, education consultant fees if used) typically add another ₹2-5 lakh. Post-arrival: laptop, winter clothing, deposits, weekend trips. Budget 20% buffer beyond this estimator.

ROI Consideration

For US MS: median starting salary 2025-26 is ₹75K-100K for STEM (₹62L-83L pre-tax). At 30% effective US tax, net ~₹45L-60L/yr — payback period typically 2-4 years post-graduation. For non-STEM / general MBA, payback can stretch to 5-7 years. Consider OPT/H1B uncertainty for US, PSW visa for UK, PGWP for Canada.

Same Master's × 2yr Across 8 Destinations

How It Works

This calculator estimates the all-in cost of studying abroad across the eight destinations that absorb the bulk of outbound student demand: India, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Singapore, New Zealand, and Ireland. Tuition + living figures are May 2026 averages, sourced from each country's national immigration portal, university-published brochures, and Numbeo cost-of-living data — converted to INR at the prevailing exchange rate.

The 4-bucket cost model

Every study-abroad budget breaks down into four layers. Tuition scales linearly with program duration — annual tuition × number of years. Living expenses (rent + food + transport + utilities + miscellaneous) are quoted per month and multiplied by 12 × duration. One-time costs cover visa application, annual health insurance, and (for some programs) application + deposit fees. Education loan EMI is layered on top if you choose to fund all or part of the spend with a study-abroad loan.

Tuition + living vary 50%+ by city / university tier

The single biggest cost variable is the city + university tier. A US MS at a state university in Karnataka with shared off-campus housing can total ₹85L for 2 years; the same program at an Ivy League school in NYC or the Bay Area can reach ₹1.8 Crore. Use the city dropdown to anchor the monthly living estimate to a realistic destination, then adjust the tuition number to reflect the actual program you're targeting (preset shows the country-wide mid-range).

The Germany advantage

Germany public universities charge zero tuition for international students at all degree levels — only a ~€300/yr semester contribution covering admin + transit. Combined with reasonable living costs (€1,100-1,500/mo), Germany comes out 70-80% cheaper than US or UK for an equivalent Master's. Only private MBA programs and a few public Baden-Württemberg programs charge a meaningful tuition fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a 2-year Master's at a typical top-100 university: India totals approximately ₹1.30-1.40 Crore (tuition $50K-70K/yr + living $2,000-2,800/mo + visa + insurance + flights). UK 1-year Master's is ₹50L-80L (tuition £18K-38K + living £1,100-1,800/mo). Canada 2-year Master's totals ₹65L-90L (tuition C$20K-45K/yr + living C$1,500-2,200/mo). The single biggest variable is the university tier — Ivy League and top-10 private US schools push the figure to ₹1.5-1.8 Crore, while state universities or regional UK / Canadian schools land at the lower end. Add a 20% buffer for unmodelled costs (test fees, application fees, post-arrival setup).
